When Heather Garrett was hired into a newly created position of community health worker from receptionist at her company, she asked for guidance on where to focus. There were no old files to work from and no job description to review. She knew she had to find her own path, and she started by figuring out how best to help improve the healthcare outcomes within her community.
Her intuition toward Health Coaching led her to Health Coach Institute’s Become a Health Coach program and she wrote a proposal asking her employer for support to earn her Health and Life Coach certificate so she could help “non-compliant” patients. To her surprise, they said yes. Heather successfully got her company to support her in this endeavor, and began to take on many Health Coaching clients.
Her goal: to serve as the communication piece between the community–aka the provider’s patient–and the providers. Heather envisioned using coaching as a way to communicate the benefits of health and wellness to each patient in ways practitioners couldn’t. Her plan to boost community wellness by working toward individual wellness won her the support she needed for her HCI education.
Before Heather completed her Health and Life Coach training, the medical center providers started sending “non-compliant” patients her way for help. She immediately found success by applying her training, intuition, and empathetic coaching style to help them understand why taking the lead on their own health and wellness would change their lives.
Heather continues to teach her clients just as HCI has taught her, with the support of a like minded community, and the experience of her own personal transformation. She provides tools that she knows will work because she’s used them to change her own health for the better.
The HCI mission is “to change the way we do health by empowering people to change lives”.
